Lu rou fan (滷肉飯), a braised pork rice bowl, is one of the most popular and perhaps the national dish of Taiwan. You can find it at nearly all Taiwanese restaurants, and it’s available to eat as an entire meal, including rice and protein, or it’s sometimes just used as the base of a meal, accompanied by other side dishes. Although you’ll find it nearly everywhere, still one of the most famous restaurants in Taipei to get a taste of braised pork rice is Jin Feng (金峰魯肉飯) restaurant (also sometimes spelled Kinfen Restaurant).
Just like other famous restaurants in Taipei, Jin Feng (金峰魯肉飯) get super packed out and crowded and a bit chaotic during meal peak times, so we arrived a little before the main lunch rush one day. I was excited to try their version of lu rou fan (滷肉飯), and along with getting a large bowl of it, we also ordered a few side dishes like a plate of stir fried water morning glory, some braised eggs, a piece of braised tofu, and a winter melon soup. Though the restaurant was busy, the service was pretty speedy and the waitresses were pretty nice, and ours could speak a little English as well - however, if you don’t speak Chinese, it’s best if you can take some photos of what you want to order to make it easier.
I started with the lu rou fan (滷肉飯), the famous Taiwanese braised pork rice bowl. The pork wasn’t as oily or as fatty as some other versions of the same dish that I had during my travels in Taiwan - but don’t get me wrong, it was still extremely greasy, but not overly so. The rice was nice and sticky, and the braised minced pork on top was extremely soft and tender, with a mix of both meat and fat on top. The fragrant oil of the braised pork coated the rice, making the entire mixture extremely taste. It was surely the best bowl of lu rou fan that I had when I was in Taipei.
Along with the braised pork rice, we also had a couple of braised eggs, which were also good. They had huge yolks, and the egg whites were a little rubber with the yolks being extremely creamy and rich on the inside. We also had a plate of stir fried water morning glory, which was cooked in lots of oyster sauce and sprinkled with crispy fried garlic on top. Additionally we also had a winter melon soup, which was very plain, and went well with the full meal.
Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice (金峰魯肉飯) is one of the most famous restaurants in Taipei for their lu rou fan, and it really is extremely good and worth coming here just to eat.

Prices: Prices are very reasonable, you can get a good meal for $3 - $5 per person. Our total bill came to just 220 TWD ($6.75) for two of us.
How to get there: To get to Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice (金峰魯肉飯) take the MRT to Chiang Kai Shek station, Exit #2, and walk straight for about 50 meters. You’ll see the restaurant right ahead of you with its bright sign with the mountains in the background.
