Fai Klom Thana, a restaurant in Bangkok, serves a marvelous plate of soft shell crab fried with herbs and chilies. Get all the details here: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/2014/08/fai-klom-thana-ptt/
Located in northern Bangkok, pretty close to the massive PTT headquarters, which is the state owned oil company in Thailand, is a restaurant called Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา). They mostly make stir fried Thai dishes, sort of Chinese influenced, and everything we ate there was quite tasty. The restaurant attracts many people, especially office workers in the nearby buildings. But although Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา) is located right in Bangkok, it’s down a quiet neighborhood street, so it really feels like you’re removed from most of the city - so it’s a nice eating environment.
Anyway, we started off with an order of tod man goong (ทอดมันกุ้ง), small shrimp patties, deep fried to a crispy. I’m not usually a huge fan of patties, so these weren’t my favorite - but they were pretty good for what they were. It sort of tasted like a shrimp hot dog to me, which crispy edges - good but not mindblowing. They were served with a sweet dipping sauce that tasted like honey.
Next came a plate of kana pla kem (คะน้าปลาเค็ม), Chinese broccoli stir fried with salted fish. This was probably one of my favorite Thai dishes I ordered at Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา). The vegetable was stir fried on just the right high fire, so it was cirp and incredibly fresh tasting. The taste of the salted fish contributed nicely to the flavor, and though it was a bit salty, it was extremely tasty.
Similar to Thai tom yum soup, but a bit different, tom klong pla chon tod (ต้มโคล้งปลาช่อนทอด), was an amazing dish we ate here. The difference between Thai tom yum soup and tom klong pla chon tod (ต้มโคล้งปลาช่อนทอด), is that the ingredients, namely the herbs and spices are first fried before adding them to the soup in tom klong. Anyway, it was extremely flavorful and I could taste the lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and those wonderfully fragrant deep fried chilies. The soup was sour, spicy, and extremely soothing.
Ok, finally let’s move on to the boo neem pad prik tai dam (ปูนิ่มผัดพริกไทยดำ), the soft shell crab dish. I had no intention of ordering soft shell crab, but when I saw it on the menu, there was no way I was going to be able to resist - soft shell crab is one of the finest things to eat. The crab was first deep fried, and then it was stir fried with an array of peppers, onions, green peppercorns, and kaffir lime leaves. The soft shell crab (ปูนิ่ม) was so crispy and so flavorful, and what I especially loved was the amazing flavor of the kaffir lime leaves and the strong pungent flavor of the green peppercorns. If there was only one downside, the boo neem pad prik tai dam (ปูนิ่มผัดพริกไทยดำ) was a bit on the salty side, but it was still marvelous delicious and I would definitely eat it again and again.
If you’re ever in the northern part of Bangkok around Chatuchak, Fai Klom Thana (ร้านไฟกลมธนา) is well worth a stop for lunch or dinner. The food hits the spot.
