Northern Thai food is not very easy to find in Bangkok, especially good northern Thai food. I normally don’t really even try to eat northern food, but typically just wait until I go somewhere like Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. But recently Ying told me about a northern Thai restaurant on the outskirts of Bangkok and we decided to go check it out for lunch one mid-day. The restaurant, called Man Muang (ร้านม่านเมือง), is located a little distance from Central Bangkok, out on Ramkhamhaeng Soi 112, probably about a 45 minute taxi ride from the center of the city. The food was incredible, well worth the journey to get there. Man Muang (ร้านม่านเมือง) is housed in a very nice old wooden house with open air walls and surrounded by banana trees. It really feels like you’re in the countryside when you’re eating there, and actually feels like you’re back in northern Thailand. They’ve also done a great job of decorating the restaurant, with old antiques, some of which are for sale.
I started the meal off with a bowl of khao soi gai (ข้าวซอยไก่), northern Thai style curry with egg noodles. Again, it’s hard to find a good bowl to find a good bowl of khao soi in Bangkok. Their version, while not the best I’ve ever had, was still quite good. The curry was rich and thick, the noodles were good, and the seasoning was nice as well. What I really liked was the prik pao, dry deep fried chilies, pounded up into flakes to season the curry. That made it fantastic. Moving on, we next tried their gaeng hanglay (แกงฮังเล), a famous northern Thai food, a pork curry. This was a very good version, and they used pineapple in their recipe, something I hadn’t really seen in a gaeng hanglay (แกงฮังเล) before. It was really good, highly recommended. I liked the sweet and sour flavor from the pineapple.
The dish that really lifted me into food heaven was the gai neung (ไก่นึ่ง), a piece of steamed chicken topped in a load of curry paste. The curry paste was so thick and so rich that it was a full centimeter in thickness. It was amazing. The curry paste was extremely flavorful, yet it wasn’t too salty or too spicy. I think there were garlic and shallots, and lots of turmeric in the mix, plus a handful of fresh cilantro and green onions to top it off. It was truly an amazing dish and next time I return to eat northern Thai food at Man Muang (ร้านม่านเมือง), I won’t miss ordering it again.
In addition to these main dishes, we also ordered a number of other northern Thai side dishes like sausage, aeb (a packet of fish with curry paste), and khao kan jeen. Everything was very good, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best northern Thai food meals I’ve ever had in Bangkok. If you’re looking for authentic northern Thai food in Bangkok, it’s worth making the trip out to Man Muang (ร้านม่านเมือง).
