Just that Aroma is unbelievable is this. Can we safely say this is the aroma of Chicago Oh yes, Welcome to Chicago A city that's guaranteed to make you hungry and one of the greatest food cities in the United States They're Huge! Today we're going on a food tour to E five of Chicago's most iconic Street Foods That's the right thing to eat when you're in Chicago I've never had something so soggy and so delicious in my life and you're about to experience all the mouthwatering action right now. I'm hanging out with my brother-in-law Derek a Chicago native and the person you want to be with when you eat your way through. Chicago We're beginning this food tour with what is probably the most important food in all of Chicago You can't to the right place for the hot dog.

thank you, thank you and all you want Chicago Yes please. So it comes with mustard. Is that relish? Relish? Yeah. Relish goes on.

Onion and onions, tomato okay, pickle, all right. Spear the pepper. oh yes. oh nice.

and uh, are those called are those hot peppers? H Yeah Sport Pepp Sport Peppers Oh sport. Peppers Okay going with hot dog. Okay, awesome. We've only been here 48 years.

Yeah, since 1975. 75. Okay and they say we have the best fries in the city. Oh okay, so welcome to Byron's hot dogs.

Been here since 1975 and they TR hey what's up man and they've been here for a long time. I'm come here to eat my food sometime too. Awes God BL Them Awesome! Pray this restant will be here for the next 100 years. Awesome and it's true.

Chicago Classic A staple serving Chicago style hot dogs and one of the things I mean I was most looking forward to eating is when you it's called dragged through the Garden which they put on pile on all the toppings, all the vegetables and this is a true icon of Chicago oh man yes what' you get for yourself? all of them. oh there's ketchup inside too. Oh here we are and now would you say this is hit like a representation of Chicago in a bun. 100% so 100% This is the traditional like iconic Chicago Hot Dog Dragged through the Garden I Love that's one of the coolest food phrases on Earth Dragged a Hot.

It's not just any hot dog, it's dragged through the garden and as it was dragged through the garden and it accumulated all these vegetables and that actually has a really interesting his because the hot dog in Chicago is a result of the Great Depression and it was I mean cheap food on the go for lots of factory workers and it actually survived through all the tough times. This hot dog is a Survivor it is, it's a Survivor and I think I mean what I was reading from a hot dog historian here in Chicago is that it developed Draged to the Garden because it came with all these vegetables on top which could be almost considered a full meal. Um, I mean like and and that would be bought for a nickel For 5 cents. For 5 cents, you could have a hot dog dragged to the Garden all of your necessary vitamins and colors and vegetables.
plus the hot dog and a bun. I mean that's all the major food groups that you would need in a meal. So I wish we could still get them for a highly nutritious this would be like my only meal if I could get it for a nickel. Still today and it is a Survivor but it is not about to survive what's about to happen.

I Will say that. so we've got the bright neon, potentially glow-in-the-dark um, relish. We've got mustard, sport pepper first, tomatoes, pickles, Spears Onions mhm mhm MH Oh yeah, there's nothing like them. mhm I mean I Don't think I've ever had a hot dog with this many toppings and this much green.

there many colors. Without a doubt it's like a salad with a little bit of meat straight up dragged through the garden. Pickle Spirits are delicious. got the snap of that Vienna Beef Dog mhm and that um, kind of like just extra vitaminy of the mustard.

Mustard is delicious. Oh man, bite too. oh you can't You can't let the peppers fall. The Sport Peppers mhm Chicago I Me it's been named as one of the greatest hot dog.

City if not the best hot dog city in the United States If not the world and I think this is the this is the reason right here I Love it I think it's fantastic Tomatoes Relish, pickles, onions mhm Okay so as I was checking out we got the fries. They said they've been rated as some of the best fries in the city. You can see they're really thin fries fried pretty crispy right? I Like what excellent hot dog is. amazing! Try Godzilla I know next time we just got a letter in the mail from who's Who in America Nice! We were nominated to be on so we wait to see if we picked or not.

Oh I like it. Been here 40 years. Awesome awesome working together. it's been pretty cool I Love it! Wow I Love it I Love it.

open mhm L was to the corner Wow! 4 hours every day. Wow every dayoo to the corner wo W I'll never 40 years I Love it. Amazing All right. Oh yeah, they are good and salty.

Good crunch with a lot of salt. You can't go wrong with that thin cut to really get all that crispiness. Those are like the type of fries you could just sit there and eat a whole bag without even knowing it. Addictive, addictive style fries.

Okay, we're down to the final bite and I Just wanted to mention though they also have the Dogzilla but because we have so much else to eat today, that's why we just went with the regular. the absolute Classic the formerly 5 Cent meal in Chicago but last bite, let's go MH that's Chicago right there. If there's one single place that like I am the absolute most excited to try and the single dish which I would not want to miss, this is the spot. And I'm talking about Italian beef which uh if I understand correctly it's I mean it's an Italian beef sandwich but it's so famous in Chicago that they literally just call it a beef and you can order just a beef and every Chicagoan will know what you're talking about.
You can call it a beef and we are here at one of true extreme: DieHard Food lovers will tell you that Johnny's is the place. The line is growing longer, but it's I mean they have some seating. They have some tables um outside I Don't think there's any seating inside, but they do have some Standing Room on the inside I think uh but it's just it's been called a well-oiled machine. It's been called a shrine of Italian beef but we're going to jump in line.

we're going to walk through. we're going to order I Cannot wait. My favorite sandwich is the the combo which is beef and sausage. uh dry cuz I don't like any juice on the bread and sweet peppers cuz that's Peppers but it's not too spicy combo dry sweet They also have tamali.

those are all of your choices. Those are all your choices. Oh yeah yeah, Tamale is pretty good too. So I I Usually get combo dry sweet with tamale and if my kids are with me I'll get them Italian Ice Yes sure nice to meet you.

Okay, thank you very much thank you very much. What was your name again? Oh Gary Gary Okay and Gary is oh it's nice to meet you Mark Very cool to meet you Also we've made it to the front of the line. Derek Are we? Are we ready to order? I think we're ready to order. See how this goes? Hello! Okay let's get can we get two Beef wet any? Peppers uh sweet and hot mix? yeah Juicy, sweet and hot.

one more uh beef with juice on the side. no gravy on the side. gra no gravy on side. so you do dry.

yeah okay. one dry pork fry no Peppers though and peppers mix too. hold that you keep. There's three sandwich in here.

Okay oh they're ready already y immediate. So they said that it would be fast once you get in line and make your order. but I didn't even turn off the camera like we made our order literally I was still paying and he handed me the bag and I thought it was I thought it was somebody waiting for their order but it was our order. They're extremely fast Again, it's extremely well oiled machine.

You get in there, you got to know what you're ordering, know your combination, and I mean there's not that many choices, but you got to know your choice, Know it before you while you're in line and they'll just fly on your order. literally. I mean you can choose your juiciness, but they literally when you get it wet, when you get it juice Juiced is wet. It's just like being dipped.

Yep, they totally give it a full dunking. A submersion. It's a submersion into the beef juice. The baptism of the beef.

baptism of the beef. We got a heavy bag of Italian beef. oh oh I'm excited. Is that okay? Oh you? this is.

Oh. it started to soak through the paper. Is that A? but we did. I did get one dry I Gu I wonder which one is dry though? Hopefully they put the dry one on the top.

Must be this one. Okay, well, they're all pretty juicy. Okay, here we go. Getting cold, the unraveling, the unraveling.
Oh the juice is soaking through. Oh smells so good. Smells quadruple wrapped in paper. As soon as you get through that second paper, you can smell the onions and smell the peppers.

it. Now are you supposed to fully unra unravel this? Or yeah, you got to fully unravel it. Just be ready to get like some more wet wipes. Something like that is here.

It is. It's coming out. It's coming out of the oh oh look at that. Yes.

So when you open it up in the paper, it just completely like butterflies. Open the bread totally saturated in beef juice and amazingly this I think is pickup. Maybe Maybe at least for a few bites. We're going to try to pick it up.

We go. I Picked it up. I got it. Juicy.

We're good. Okay, you get the pizza. Oh wow. Sweetness from the peppers.

A little bit of heat from the peppers. literally. the bread just kind of melts right along with the right along with the goes down. You don't need to chew the bread.

Those onions give you a nice little punch of flavor within there. It's been called from what I read: the ultimate gut-wrenching grease bomb ever devised by humankind. and that's that's the truth. Oh, it's so good.

It's so juicy. It's so meaty. The beef is brazed in spices. You taste that kind of oregano herbal taste to it.

Rosemary Maybe. but then it's sliced so thin. Then combined with those Peppers which just give it that acidity I'm dripping in grease. You ready.

Don't grab it. don't grab it here. we go. Just stuff your face in it.

It's like imazing how it holds together and yet at the same time like it should just fully collapse. It sort of does collapse, but at the same time you can sort of take it to your face before it fully collapses. That's a work of art. This is a landmark.

What do you think about the heat? Cuz you're I love them cuz you're like the guy that loves the heat. Is it enough too much? I Love I Love those spicy peppers. They do have a little kick to to them. yeah they do have a little little B They kind of like you can feel the spiciness a little bit around your lips, but then they don't burn your mouth much.

Yeah, um. but then you've got the sweet peppers as well. We got a combination right that also give it a nice balance of flavor. Literally like halfway through the sandwich and the whole thing's about to fall apart.

MH Mhm. This sandwich right here in your hands is worth coming to Chicago for. Oh I'm just coated in a layer of Italian beef oil you cold buy bread. It's one of those sandwiches that when you take a big bite, you actually have to close your eyes so you don't get splashed into your eyes.

They can't have so much. I've never had something so soggy and so delicious in my life. I Wasn't going to set it down, but I will risk the last few bites setting it down to try something. also that you absolutely have to order here that I think everybody orders here.
The Italian Ice Lemonade Italian Ice Oh yeah, wow, that hits the spot. What a combination! No wonder everybody orders it. It's so refreshing. The ice is so finely shaved.

Oh and it turns to slushies as I keep sitting here Mhm I've made it, the final bite accumulated. it's actually there's so much juice here we go! Unbelievable! Ultra Satisfying everything I Hoped and dreamed for. On the Chicago Street Food tour, we've come to one of the most quintessential Chicago dishes I Am so excited! Oh, this is one of the most important foods in all of Chicago Welcome to Jim's original and as the story goes, there's a plaque right here about James Jimmy dates back to 1939 and he was an IM he came from Europe He began working at his aunts hot dog stall which is uh, originally on the corner of Maxwell and House Dead streets. He took his aunt's hot dog cart to the next level.

He created what is legendary in Chicago what's called the Polish sausage sandwich and eventually Jim became so well known. He became a legend of street food in Chicago I Love what the website says. Perhaps there has never been a pleasure as great as taking a bite into one of Jimmy's original sandwiches. Now starting off on that corner on Maxwell Street Things eventually progressed.

Uh, the city began developing and eventually due to the city expansion, Jym's original needed to switch locations and they've since switched a number of locations until their current location. The giant, iconic brick, yellow and red building with the giant Jim's original sign on it that just gets absolutely packed and known for their Polish sausages. Derek Tell us about Jim's original Polish Sausages Are you? Uh, are you wanting me to talk about my breakfast after I Used to drop my mother off at work yes that's what I so my mother worked uh at Rush University Medical Center Up here it's like a mile up the road. so occasionally when I would use her car in high school I drop her off usually around 6:00 a.m.

and then swing by here and get two or three polishes for my So you order, you pay, it's extremely fast. I mean almost everybody comes here for the Polish sausage, but they have hot dogs. they have uh, fried pork chop sandwiches and there's really only a couple of toppings. you get mustard.

You have this mountain of smoldering sweet onions that are caramelizing on the hot plate so you get it loaded with onions. the Polish sausage goes in and then you also have the option of some of the the Chili Peppers The Pickled Chili Peppers as well. Oh man, it is a it's a work of art. Let's unwrap the package.

let's see what we have. We got the Polish Sizzling Hot. Oh I Love how that juice is seeping through the paper. It's hot, it's fresh, it's just.

it's always here for you man. Oh look at that look at that. That's an aroma you wouldn't mind to just become your your scent, your scent for. Life Load it up with some of these.
Peppers Oh look at that. That's beautiful. Cheers! Oh wow Oh perfect crunch. That is everything I was hoping for.

Perfect crunch on that sauce. It snapped as you take that bite it snaps. The onions are so sweet and flavorful. Oh and the Pickled sedanos are nice that give it a nice heat to it.

That's what I was wondering. what do you think of the heat? Excellent Yeah. I Feel like these onions are literally grilled for like days on end to come out. This flavor cool.

The flavor just keeps on building and building. They just sit there absorbing juices and just like until they're like sponges. The onions are just sponges of Polish flavor. And those peppers.

they are spicy. Oh man that is perfection. The defit spicy. So I got a little I got a little sweat coming in just a little bit.

but yeah it is so phenomenal. Like the simplest thing and they've been doing it the same way for almost 90 years now. Yes, wait, 85. A landmark, uh, an institution, a relic of Chicago It's even more than I expect.

Love it. Glad you're enjoying it. Chicago and another chili. Oh yeah, wow, that's just unbelievably addictive.

It is something so simple. but I think it's the quality of that polish. It's the snap. It's the mustard.

It's the caramelized sweet onions. It's those pickled spicy peppers. and I think they're sanos. But oh man, it's the sum of all the ingredients that just make something extraordinary.

Oh yeah. dripping onions, dripping grease, dripping happiness. Final bite: that that's the right thing to eat when you're in. Chicago Oh oh, those are good Mhm.

A little bit crispy on the edges, soft and chewy on the inside. Oh yeah, that was everything I thought it was going to be and more. It fulfilled all of my Polish sausage dreams. Absolutely delicious, So tasty, so iconic.

I mean I think I what I love about Jim's original is just. it's something that everyone can enjoy no matter. I mean you'll see people from here from every Walk of Life people of Chicago This is a place for everyone and it's friendly. It's tasty.

it brings back memories. It's undoubtedly one of the things one of the top foods that you cannot miss when you visit. Chicago We're in South Chicago Yes and from what I understand this is the best chicken. Okay, I mean we'll let Derek tell us all about it Harold's Harold's Chicken Shack Chicken Shack So hands down this is the best fried chicken that you can get in the souths side of Chicago I would just say in the city Uh but yeah.

iconic threepiece, mild, sauuce or hot sauce. Or you can do a mixture of both Uh, and then it comes with fries and bread and here specifically they actually fry it and beef fat to get a little bit extra crispy. All of them are numbered, but are they all different? They are so all of them are different. Uh, there are like a few things like on the menu that say the exact same, but recipes might change from place to place.
Uh, but they're numbered throughout the entire city as well. So uh, and they're individually owned. So so everybody has their favorite location for The Taste Absolutely. So here we go: Herald's Chicken Shack This is I mean it has so much meaning I know uh in the south side of Chicago This place is so cool.

Number 35 Harold's Chicken Shack Uh. fried in beef fat. You step inside here it just smells so good. Love the logo.

Uh, there's no seating in here so it's just takeaway. Typically chicken wings are like the thing to get. Typically the normal thing that you usually get is like a four piece. Uh with the fries and bread.

Um, or you can get you can get like a half. D But it's all about the chicken wings. Mild sauce right? It's got to be mild sauce or you could do both. So you could do a combination of mild and hot sauce.

but somehow people really love the the mild sauce right? Yeah, the mild sauce is like the best which is like A it's like a barbecue SL Uh, kind of like hot sauce vinegar based a little bit. I Guess the best way to say it but okay. okay. appreciate you.

Oh nice, Thank you so much. have a good one and be safe. Thank you you too! All righty that's so cool. Oh that's a tray.

There it is. Thank you very much. Okay, so here we go. My first time ever.

Harold's Chicken Shack A whole pack. The reveal: Yes, Are you excited? Oh yes. Oh, it's been years. Oh so it's drenched in the mild sauce.

Oh the entire the entire thing is drenched in the chicken in the in the mild sauce. Oh it's so juicy. So we got 25 fried wings, a pile of fries, a mountain of fries just drenched in the mild sauce m, and some extra mild sauce on the side just in case, just in case there wasn't enough. Oh I Feel like it needs to start with fries first? let's go Fries! I Love! Oh it's so sloppy and juicy and wet.

Oh man, something about Chicago and food is wet and juicy. Yes, that tiny wonderful sweet mild sauce before I even took my butt I inhaled and I got that vinegary Aroma down my throat and then it hits you with the sweetness stickiness. Oh that's addictive. It reminds me of uh, like almost like sweet and sour but not as like not as sticky.

That sounds weird I don't even know of another way to warm it. Maybe thicker, but not as sticky. Yeah and not as sweet, but still sweet. Mhm.

It's absolutely. You have to lick your fingers because that sauce is so sticky. Oh that's delicious. Yeah okay.

let's move into the the wings mhm I Want to one of those at the top covered in the sauce? Oh man. oh yes. Wonderful crispiness. That mild sauce is going to like soften it up just a bit.

Okay. hang oh wow. Just like I Remember oh that's so tasty. Yeah just saturated in that mild sauce but crispy at the same time.
We did manage to see a little bit we can see through the glass. they just have this small opening that you can see to the back of the and they were welcoming to like see you back there The chicken goes into a it's a dry a dry batter, dry flour. It's not wet at all. deep fries until crispy.

The wetness comes with that sauce. It's crispy, it's gooey. it's Saucy it sticks to your fingers all at the same time. The bone it goes.

texture is amazing. I've missed you so much Herold's Fried Chicken Chicken It's everything I thought it was going to be and more a like Dereck was mentioning this particular location. They fry their chicken wings in beef fat, give it a little bit of extra flavor. Little bit deeper flavors as well when it comes to that beef fat.

mhm oh man oh it's so good. I Feel like you just can't go wrong. two Wings Four wings 20 wings 100 Wings a whole catering tray of them like we got I'll eat them all I mean I was a little uncertain about mild sauce I've never I've never ordered mild sauce in my life. but you got to do it here.

I Get it. It's addictive. It's tasty. It has all the the balance of flavor.

It's a Harmony So addictive. Yeah oh look at that thisen. Wing This is why I would be here sh make sure to say this is why I was here. Oh oh man oh oh couple bones, bones down bones down birds will get them.

Texture is amazing. such a balance of flavor. so iconic. Oh see Harolds and this is why I was here three to five times a week growing up cuz where else can you get a delicious meal like this for a few dollars like I Don't blame you.

Oh man these chicken wings are so addictive. I You cannot stop. Oh I was eating the chicken wings from the top which are drenched in the most sauce. but as you go down it's less sauce and you taste more of that crispiness and that beef fat that is fried in.

But I think the perfect combination is it half drenched in the sauce and then half crispy? I'm so addictive. So good and just an absolute icon of South Chicago Phoenix It's not going to be the same. That's happiness. Okay I can have one more and then I Got to be done.

Oh so back in the day. I Absolutely cannot stop. Fried chicken cooked to Perfection Oh this was definitely not the first food in Chicago that's gone all the way up my nose. but I got be careful that bring bring wet wipes.

it's going to get messy. So good smothered in mild sauce. Oh that's a a fried chicken experience you'll not, you'll never forget. Okay, we're on our way to the next place we are still in the south of Chicago and we're going to a place that does something so unique.

It's a type of barbecue, but the way they do it is totally has defined. Chicago Barbecue This place is legendary. You step out of the car, you could see the smoke coming out of the chimney. They're barbecuing right here.
it's standing only you get in line. you make your order from the window. Oh I am so excited. Welcome to Lm's Barbecue.

It is started by Bruce and Miles Lemons back in 1954, but the Lems family. they were originally the Lem brothers and their father William who was enslaved in Alabama and their Plantation where they worked was a it was a lemon Plantation And it says here that during the Reconstruction the surnames of former slaves uh were often then connected to their experiences and so that's how their name was became lemons Of course there's many more details, but the story continues. the recipe, the barbecue, the sauce was passed down and eventually the family then moved uh from Indianola Mississippi uh North here to Chicago where they preserved the tradition and also created this new distinct I mean and a definition of the Chicago style barbecue. I Love everything about this place.

It's I mean you can feel the history it has so much Heritage it has so much it's just oozing with character, the aroma of the barbecue smells incredible and they're famous for especially rib tips and hot links. But all the ribs and one of the things that they're most unique and that has truly defined the style of barbecue in Chicago is what's called an aquarium smoker. Now we don't have access to it, but you can see it from the glass windows and the aquarium smoker is a direct barbecue smoking technique where the the fire is on the bottom. I Mean it looks like an aquarium.

It looks like a fish tank on top that holds the smoke in. It's a seethrough glass fish tank like structure and that holds the smoke in. This is the Chicago style and something that they do best here at LMS Barbecue. Appreciate yall? Yes! Oh good thing we have the minivan.

Hood Cannot wait. Yes. Literally that smokiness like even if you are already stuffed. that's that.

Aroma will make you hungry again. Absolutely. Oh oh. Lifting up the lid.

Oh they're smoking and they're just lathered in that sauce. Those look incredibly tender and juicy. Insanely juicy. and it has a good little bark on it as well.

Oh yeah. okay. I think let's open up everything. Oh it's the hot links.

Oh oh oh, look at those hot links. Oh my goodness with fries on the bottom just drenched in the sauce. There We go. Oh it's just drowning in their barbecue sauce.

Oh the bread. Look at that. It's a whole slab. Oh man.

the bread sopping it up. Woo yeah Yes! I Think let's start with the rib tips. This is what they're most known for I Feel pretty good about that. See the cartilage? You see all the the odds and ends.

o oh and look at but oh yeah. oh man, that's hot. Okay, look at that. the amount of meat.

literally. Literally. this came like 1 minute ago. it was in the smoker.
It's out. They're flaming hot. they're still boiling. mhm wow M I'm loving everything about this.

oh that's unbelievable. The smokiness a little bit excited there a little bit. the smokiness. the bark as Derrick was saying that bark that crunch on the outer part of the ribs.

That is unbelievable. The sauce. it has vinegar and a sweetness mhm. a little bit of pepperiness.

It's tender, it's smoky. it's Saucy that is a flavor you'll never forget. Oh man oh oh oh down goes cartilage. Mhm Oh wowow this one of those.

Chicago Staples like rib tips is what Chicagoans love and are known for. Add that with the hot links as well. let's move in those as hot links. Uhhuh Yep.

I'm Ready the trough served in the trough fries. There actually are fries in the bottom. Oh, swimming in their mild sauce with the hot links on top? I Love it. Grab a grab a hot link.

Yes! I don't This is the greatest presentation ever. You heard the snap. M Mhm It's like a barbecue breakfast sausage. That's what it tastes like, but really like a good ratio of fat meat.

It crumbles, crumbles in your mouth. You've got the smokiness, got the snap of the skin and then again, just drench in that sauce. That mild sauce is incredibly I mean kind of similar to to Harolds with the mild sauce. It's like that balance of flavor, that sweet, sour tanginess.

It's oh, that sausage is good. You can see the juices squeeze it. mhm. dipping into those fries, getting them onto the the hot link.

see that's why it's split open so you just drop a couple of fries in there. The completely soggy fries in barbecue sauce. Oh I Dropped it. Oh there we are MH Oh, that takes sogginess to the next level and you will love it.

Yeah, and it's not. It's not like it's not called a hot link because of spice. Um, oh okay. in the sense of like extreme heat, it's just more so the spiciness and the flavors of the actual sausage itself.

But it's not like burn your mouth type of hot. No, it's not not really hot. but you do see a few chili seeds in there and you do taste the flavor of chili in there. just not.

But it's good. Yeah, really really good. Up for the slab. Next, let's open the door.

Oh boy. look at this. Wait wait, just look at that. It's going to fall off the bone and then.

so this one is kind of the dry one. If you go for the one below, you go for the one below. There was another rib tip. it was just hanging out.

It's swimming. It's swim. Oh forgot. totally forgot about the fries now.

Oh yeah, they were under there. A little hidden secret. a spyy of Fr. R if I may call it that I think this is a slab.

we just need to bite literally. I Just grabbed it and like my finger just went through the entire roof of the of the slab. I'm taking a full bite of the slab. well I guess I'll join you few things more satisfying in life than taking a bite of a slab.
All right I'm ready. Oh man. I Just got a mouth full of bark and it tastes wonderful. It's so good.

Yeah the skin, the outer edge, uh, the ends. it just peels off the bone. The bur ends are insane. Oh man, that is insanely good.

and you really do get a lot of that smokiness throughout it a lot.
