There are snacks available everywhere you look in Thailand, and in Bangkok snacking on snacks is one of the favorite activities of nearly all residents. Snacks in Thailand are convenient to eat, often displayed on the side of the road and packaged so they are easy to grab on the go.
In todays video, I went to one of my favorite markets in Bangkok known as Sriyan Market and found a lady cooking up an ancient Thai snack know as Khao Kriap Wow (ข้าวเกรียบว่าว). It can also be referred to as Khao Khuap or Khao Phong. This ancient Thai snack has been around for quite some time!
The Thai street snack all begins with rice flour that combined with coconut milk, palm sugar, eggs, and oil. The ingredients are beat up into a pancake like batter and then made into thin pancakes. Now I don't have a clue how the preparation goes from there, is that the Khao Kriap Wow (ข้าวเกรียบว่าว) is then dried into thin sheets. After that process, the snack is then fired over hot coals as it cooks quickly while being tossed back and forth using bamboo tongs.
The result is a cracker like edible that looks like a shrimp chip and tastes a lot like a Western meringue. The rice can be detected as can the egg white flavor, but I could hardly taste the coconut cream in it. Anyway, it's kind of dry and not actually my favorite Thai snack in the world, but nevertheless, it has some history and is pretty interesting to see being prepared.

The last time I saw Khao Kriap Wow being made like this was 20 years ago. This thing is sweet and melts in your mouth right away.

I love that you seem to have genuine respect for the culture and country you're in. A lot of younger tourist tend to be a little immature and judgmental. Thanks for what you do!
