Zong Pet Paloe (ซ้งเป็ดพะโล้) is a famous restaurant in Bangkok that serves marvelous duck boiled in Chinese spices known as pet paloe (เป็นพะโล้). Get all the details here: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/2014/07/bangkok-duck-zong-pet-paloe/
I don’t always have time to explore areas of northern Thailand, so when I have an opportunity, I always jump at the chance. One of the restaurants that had been on our to eat list, was Zong Pet Paloe (ซ้งเป็ดพะโล้), a restaurant that’s famous throughout Bangkok, especially in the Lat Phrao area for their duck and goose. As soon as you reach the restaurant, you’ll know they serve duck, the glass cabinet at the entrance is always filled with a few bird’s waiting to be ordered. Many people just order take-away, and then dine on their duck and goose at home, but they also have a huge dining room sitting area for eating. I was excited.
Of course, if you ever go to this restaurant, the first things that you’ll want to eat is their duck boiled in Chinese spices which is known in Thai as pet paloe (เป็นพะโล้). The duck came sliced on a plate, and sitting in a pool of the fragrant juices. I could really taste the beautiful spice flavor of five star anise, mixed with sweet soy sauce, and of the course the meaty succulent pieces of duck. I’m not a huge fan of duck skin that’s not crispy, so when it’s served in this way, I normally like the take off the skin and only eat the meat of the duck. Their version of duck was amazing, the meat was so tender, so juicy, and had so much incredible flavor to it. Along with pet paloe (เป็นพะโล้), I also couldn’t resist ordering pet kra pao (เป็ดกระเพรา) or duck stir fried with holy basil, garlic, and chilies. This time, the pieces of duck were deep fried first, and then stir fried along with oyster sauce, soy sauce, and the essential ingredients including the flavor enhancing holy basil. Again, it was an absolutely sensational dish, one that I would truly recommend to you if you ever eat at Zong Pet Paloe (ซ้งเป็ดพะโล้).
Also on the menu, you’ll find a full range of other Thai Chinese dishes, most of them stir fried or duck based. One of the famous dishes they serve is Thai chicken soup, known in Thai as kha gai super (ขาไก่ซุปเปอร์). I have to be honest and say that chicken feet are not my favorite thing in the world, they don’t taste bad, but there’s just not much to them - there’s no real meat to eat - it’s more of just a fatty skin. The soup was filled with about an entire flock of chicken feet, all swimming in a duck smelling soup, that smelled quite similar to our plate of duck. The soup itself was dangerously delicious, very nicely duck flavored, and it also was filled with chilies and slightly sour. The chicken feet, well let’s just say they were chicken feet! In addition to these dishes, we also ordered a simple plate of stir fried mushrooms, which turned out to be fantastic, and a plate of a Thai dish known as yam pla duk foo, which is a catfish fluffy salad served with green mango salad.
I thought the food at Zong Pet Paloe (ซ้งเป็ดพะโล้) restaurant in Bangkok was wonderful. The duck dishes, which they are most famous for, were definitely the best. But really all the stir fried dishes were excellent. If you are ever in the Lat Phrao area of Bangkok, this is a place that you need to eat at.
