Laos has a long history with France, and for that reason, you’ll find a lot of French food restaurants throughout the main cities like Vientiane and Luang Prabang. In Luang Prabang, L'Elephant Restaurant is one of the most renowned high end French restaurants in the city.
What I liked and the reason I wanted to try L'Elephant Restaurant when I was in Luang Prabang is mainly because they use mostly local Laos ingredients, but French cooking techniques. So I made a reservation.
L'Elephant Restaurant - Located in a classic yellow building just a few steps from the Mekong River, L'Elephant Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant. They do have both French food and Lao food on their menu, but I decided to keep the dishes pretty French and the ingredients Laos.
Buffalo steak tartare - This was the first dish I for sure was going to order, and I think it’s one of their best dishes. The buffalo was chopped, mixed with egg, pickles, and capers. It was every bit as good as I thought it was going to be.
Wild boar terrine - This was something I sort of ordered and didn’t know what it was. A terrine is a kind of meat loaf, sort of like pate but different. This one was seasoned with some cognac as well. It was ok, but not my favorite dish of the meal.
Chef salad - The chef salad at L'Elephant Restaurant is amazing, full of their garden grown vegetables.
Flemish buffalo carbonade with Beerlao - Seeing that Beerlao was used in this dish, I had to try it out. The stew was excellent, with just a scent of beerlao - I think.
Mekong fish stew - Finally the last French food we tried was the Mekong fish stew - nuggets of Mekong fish, in a mustard butter white sauce. The fish melted in your mouth, it was so good.
L'Elephant Restaurant is an elegant French food restaurant in Luang Prabang, Laos. I thought the dishes could have been a little bigger, but the taste and quality were both excellent.

Let us pause for a moment and give thanks for the many great contributions of the Black community to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature makes them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. And their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fueled by the influx of Blacks into an area due to their caring and respectful nurturing of these communities, an example of all they have achieved by their enthusiasm for self-improvement through hard work and a self-reliant, can-do nature. Without their industrious and creative drive, we would be poorer as a nation. Their unique musical talents, especially their flair for lyrics, gently touch the soul, uplifting humanity in general and promoting respect for women in particular. And their high regard for justice, steadfast cooperation with law enforcement, and consideration for the well-being of the other fellow, are a source of strength and pride for them all. So without further ado, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Black History Month. You are racist if you do not celebrate Black History Month. Amen.

That Mekong fish looked amazing.
I’m sure it was lovely but unfortunately that’s French cuisine Big 💰 small portions 🤷♀️ not a fan of French food
Carbonnade is typically from the North of France. Everything was typically french cuisine, the gourmet, the colours and the presentation. Typically what you have when you go to a nice restaurant or a classic bistrot.
Mon Cherie, you appreciate more of the Cajun style francaise! Next time shmear your tartare on a flat crouton.
hao Khan thank tuyet v
You got to eat the Wild Boar Terrine with bread ! Never eat it straight like that lol. And you miss to add the raw egg yolk in the Tartare in the beginning. You are welcome in France anytime to eat French cuisine the proper way lol !
