GREAT OCEAN ROAD, AUSTRALIA - Today weโre going on a tour of the iconic Great Ocean Road, and weโll be eating some of the best Australian seafood along the way.
The Great Ocean Road is a historical highway that connects remote coastal towns along the southern coast of Australia. It was initially started as a project to create jobs for soldiers returning from WW1. The construction began in 1919 and was mostly completed when it was handed over to the government in 1936. When I visited Australia, I was excited to drive this iconic road for the majestic natural beauty - the rugged sea cliffs, the windswept coast - and probably most of all - to discover some of the best local seafood restaurants along the way.

I'm in Victoria Australia and today I'm taking you on a seafood tour Down The Great Ocean Road Get ready for some Majestic scenery and some incredible local fresh seafood. Hey everyone hope you're having an amazing day! It's Mark Wiens I'm very excited to be here in Victoria Australia We arrived to the town of Turkey which is about. It was about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne to get here. This is where it all begins.
Where our journey our Seafood tour Down The Great Ocean Road begins Great Ocean Road is a historical Highway that connects remote coastal towns along the southern coast of Australia. It was initially started as a project to create jobs for soldiers returning from World War One The construction began in 1919 and was mostly completed when it was handed over to the government in 1936.. when I visited, Australia I was excited to drive this iconic road for the Majestic natural beauty, the rugged, Sea Cliffs the wind-swept coast, and probably most of all to discover some of the best local seafood restaurants along the way. So here we are.
This restaurant is called Fishos Turkey and so they have some seating, some big tables out front but then you come inside and there's actually quite a long line in here, but you order at the front of seating on the inside as well. but the outside is really nice so I'm gonna man everything looks good from the fish tacos to the Poke Bowl to the arrow squid. We gotta try the arrow Arrow squid here and maybe some fish and chips. Okay so you get a number and we're gonna.
man. it's a little bit overcast today, but really nice weather outside. It's really a popular place and then you got your number so they'll bring out our order. But in the meantime I Decided to try one of the Ginger Tonic Kombucha.
let's try it. Oh nice. Oh yeah, the ginger keeps on coming. Really good but this is such a cool place you could see the sea.
This is definitely a really cool surf town. and again Turkey the home of Australia's surfing and our order should be out pretty soon. Yes please! Thank you hello people! Yeah Sweet potato cakes thank you very much! All of the food has arrived and reading on the menu. One of the things that I love about this place already is that they only use locally caught fresh, sustainable as well as wild caught.
Seafood So I think we should begin this tour with the fish and chips, local fries, hand cut fries, and the special of the day was actually gummy shark. which we should. Oh beautifully deep fried, golden. Let's break it in half.
All that flakes. Oh you can see how juicy it is. Oh hot and fresh. Wow.
Dutch firm that's juicy, actually feels quite lean and the batter is crispy, a little bit fluffy. Yeah, that's fresh. That's delicious. Try the the tartar sauce.
Mmm. You immediately taste the dill in the tartar sauce. Creamy, a little bit sweet, balanced, sweet, and sour. and then some of these hand cut fries I Love fries when they keep the the skins on them I wonder if they have tomato sauce at the front? that's okay quality? Yeah, you can tell the the freshness of the potatoes for sure. Okay I went in to get some tomato sauce I Love tomato sauce sweet tart Tangy Okay another special for the day was the arrow squid which I got grilled. oh that's good. that has a bit of bounciness, but it's really soft and tender. It has a sweet a real sweetness to it as well and I love the texture of it.
not a little bit chewy and a little bit like soft all at the same time even though that sounds like opposing textures. but oh it's good. Next up another special for the day was the kingfish collar in a miso sauce I Had to try this. It's really kind of like Gourmet gourmet food here I'm going for that.
that bite that top bite off the collar. oh look at how buttery it is. um oh that's delicious that is salty and Smoky you taste the grill. um and of course the collar is one of the best.
parts of the fish. has that beautiful fatty content to it fresh Smoky melt in your mouth so juicy as well or the color I think in Australia they call it the wing the wing of the fish. Wow oh it's straight butter especially. do get closer to the Bone it just gets more and more buttery and just melt in your mouth.
Next up for the Poke Bowl comes with Sashimi comes with green beans, kimchi, avocado and some kind of a aioli in the center and I think there's is it brown rice on the bottom there I'll try especially one of these pieces of fish. Sashimi with some of the rice and growing up for some time in Hawaii this is definitely different from Pokeballs that I know of. This is almost more like a a salad with Sashimi on the top with rice on the bottom but kind of like a like a salad. probably a whole salad mixture.
Almost okay. the fish. the Sashimi is excellent. Not quite sure how much I like aioli on top of rice, but the fishes.
all that fish is delicious that melts in your mouth. This is another side. the fried sweet potato. It's like a whole slice of giant sweet potato battered and deep fried.
similar too. similar to fish and chips, just sweet potato in the center. oh that's good. Oh man, that sweet potato melts in your mouth.
so soft. sweet batter fried, tastes like the similar probably is the same batter. similar batter as the fish as well, so it's puffy, it's crispy, kind of has that beer batter kind of texture to it. I mean what stands out about all the seafood is it's fresh, it's local and again, wild.
caught right off the shore here in Victoria That was a great Community fresh local seafood restaurant and as much as I'd love to stay in this town longer and explore more. We have a lot more to drive down the coast and we have a lot more delicious food to eat that was actually just about a 15-20 minute drive down the road. We're now in a place that's called Angle C I believe that's how you pronounce it and this is the the next restaurant is here. it looks really good. Oh here it is. This place is called Fish By Moonlight and kind of at the back of a little shopping center here and again their philosophy. They specialize in fresh local seasonal seafood and so they mostly have the the fish of the day or different daily specials. and I mean that's what you want to be eating when you come to a place like this.
So today the the specials are the Grilled Mirror Dory Fish and The Battered monkfish. We got one of each plus some oysters plus some salmon. They have some fresh salmon today as well for sashimi. so or it's all.
They have some seating outside, no seating on the inside, it's it's more of a fish market on the inside plus where you order and then you can go outside to eat or take away. Oh that's the salmon. Where did you say the salmon is from? Tuna Patuna in Tasmania Okay, okay and where are the oysters from? they're from Smoky Bay Smokey Bay Oysters Great! Oh those are beautiful. This is the fresh monkfish of the day.
Extraordinary. This is the grilled fish over here. Wow! I Gotta start with those hot fresh fries actually. Oh these fries look perfect.
Look at the way they're just perfectly golden. Oh yeah, catch up Thank you! Those fries are as good as they look. perfect. Crispy, gooey on the center, thick cut.
Oh man, the fries are good. Let's move into the sashimi. look at this. salmon salmon sashimi which he said comes from Tasmania Maybe just a little bit of soy sauce? Oh wow yeah.
Oh that's oh, that's pure clean, fresh, all the texture, the butteriness while it's delicious. I mean I Love what they're doing. Simple menu focused on the Fresh Catch of the Day let's try the the fish. this is monkfish.
Look at the way. oh I love how they deep fry here. crispy bubbly Airy maybe a little bit of lemon? Okay, hmm oh wow. fish just dissolves in your mouth.
The monkfish. that batter is incredible. I Love how it's crispy all the way through, almost like tempura, but even more light, really bubbly. and Airy the batter is not heavy at all.
I Really like their tartar sauce too because it's not not on the sweet side but more on the sour side. Okay, this one is the Dory the mirror. Dory Fish Squeeze on some lemon juice. This one is grilled on the hot griddle.
I Actually again like I'm not always a fan of tartar sauce, but this is really good tartar sauce. It's just perfectly nice and sour. They know how to cook fish I Think just perfectly. Sure it's not overcooked, the remaining juicy, fresh, clean, good tartar sauce.
nice sour lemon juice. okay. And then finally the the salad. which is like a coleslaw, but nice.
Oh, there's even pumpkin seeds in here too. Oh nice. That's like a sesame. kind of like a mutual sesame dressing.
Yeah, sometimes the the mayonnaise dressings and sauces can be a little bit sweet. This is more on the sour side as well, which I really like. Okay, then finally we got a dozen freshly shucked oysters. I'm just going in. no lemon first. slurp it down whole. Wow, that's good. Oh, that's the taste of the sea.
undoubtedly that salty, juicy, and then the sweetness as you keep on doing, Then the sweetness comes at the final cereal. It's just like layers of taste that you're that hits your taste buds. Those are some incredible oysters. Let's go Lemon juice this time.
I Think it's especially good with the lemon juice because that kind of contrasts the saltiness of the oysters. Then I'm going to squeeze on a little tomato sauce tomato sauce here. Oh yeah, these fries are also just outstanding, but the pucker fish is better. Highly recommend it.
This is like incredibly fresh. Incredibly, just good quality seafood. just cooked so well. They did an amazing job.
Highly recommended this place when you pass through Angle. C EE Oh that monkfish. that batter. Incredible! That was absolutely outstanding.
Great guys as well. So happy after that and we're moving on down the Great Ocean Road Foreign has been spectacular so far and I mean just going along the Ocean Road Winding around the cliffs, the views of the oceans. we're gonna stop for a coffee here and I believe if we go down into the trees we can see koalas but there's some beautiful they look like parrots. Oh there he is up there.
maybe a type of parrot that are landing on the on the general store and the cafe Koala. but we're gonna stop here. I mean it's actually a little General Store A little convenience store plus a coffee shop. Plus they have some food, some big things, some sandwiches, some pastries and muffins.
but definitely I Need a coffee and as you drink your coffee here along with a extremely hot coffee, we also got a quick ham and cheese toasty ham cheese buttered toasted sandwich. Oh oh it's oozing. Oh look at the cheese. it's oozing.
Oh all the cheese pull oil cheese. Very nice place though. Kenneth River Extremely relaxing. So typically people walk down this road to try to find Koalas in the trees and you can sense that there's definitely koalas.
but unfortunately we don't have enough time to keep on walking. So I don't think we're gonna have a chance to see koalas here, but that's okay. We saw some beautiful birds and we're going to continue on for a mega Seafood meal. Thank you! We have made it to Apollo Bay This is one of the most iconic one of the bigger towns along the Great Ocean Road and it is also home to the Apollo Bay fisherman Co-op Okay, so the Apollo Bay Fisherman's Corp has been here since uh, 1948, so we're coming up to our 75th.
Year Great! And we're the last of three co-ops in Victoria and so we've been open every day since 1948 and basically what happened 40 years ago was uh, the fishermen got together and said, let's let's better Market our catch and We Gather the fish together and they were sending her up to Melbourne and selling them locally, but collectively as a cooperative. That's what they decided to do and we've been doing the same for nearly 75 years now. So the other good thing about the co-op is that uh Apollo Bay being where it is on the Great Ocean Road tourism has become uh, you know, very popular. The last 15 20 years people are coming down on their way to the Apostles and they're able to use Apollo Bay as a seafood destination for sure. Instead of sending stuff off to Melbourne or other places or overseas, we try and eat as much of it here as we can now. Okay, we call it the home of the Rock Lobster it's our uh, it's the name we gave ourselves, but we actually really believe in that now. Yeah, all the seafood that you guys serve is directly from the we put the local. we put as much of the local stuff okay into uh, onto our plates into our town into the local restaurants.
So that's what really puts us on the map. Seafood Very cool. Not a bad place to be for sure and so I mean there's absolutely no better place to be when you're driving down the Great Ocean Road stop with the incredible View and to have some of the local fresh seafood. Apollo Bay Seafood Co-op Fisherman's Co-op exactly Seafood Destination Fisherman's Co-op It's so as authentic as it as it was on day one.
Amazing! Thank you so much. You're more than welcome, thank you. We really appreciate it. Okay, so you got some big lobsters now? Yeah, they're not massive Matthew but they're quite good.
Pretty tricky to. Um, Okay, so you're so they're caught. Are they caught locally in this area? Uh, yes. they caught locally in this area.
Wow. it's pretty decent size. Wow. About how many kilos would this one be? like? 3.3 or something? Okay, well what did you say was the biggest one you've seen? 4.4 4.4 so like double the size of this? Lobster But these are the the lobsters that they're so well known for here and which we're definitely gonna try at the restaurant where they prepare them.
But this is the really one of the prized catch off the coast right here. And then you said you have another type of lobster there too. Uh, they're the same love stuff, but they look a little bit different. Oh okay.
okay. they just come from deeper water that one there and that one is a little bit, uh, lighter. Oh yeah, they're they're kind of two-toned also. Yeah, okay.
wow. Wow. Oh yeah, it's actually like purple. Yeah, Beautiful.
Yeah. Thank you, Thank you, thank you very much. So we're gonna start off with some fresh local oysters. Oh beautiful oysters.
Shucked local oysters served with just lemon on the side. Oh yeah, okay here we go. Plump and juicy and Briny oh oh I Love the flavor. That texture just melts in your mouth. just kind of like slides down but also melts at the same time. Oh really good, extremely fresh quality. all right for my next oyster going. Tabasco Those oysters are extraordinary! Yeah! I Do like it I mean I Do like it with that extra sprinkle of Tabasco that vinegary chili like liquid to it that kind of like I mean that adds to the the saltiness and the sweetness of the oyster.
Thank you very much Nice thank you. This is two half lobsters. Oh nice. I got some more coming Thank you very much Oh my.
God Oh yeah the grilled fish. Okay thank you. that's the flatheads. Okay thank you very much thank you! Yes! I think this is all the seafood that we got.
It just comes out oh man. I like how they bring the oysters first and then they just deliver all the hot The Platters of seafood and again I Love how they do it here with all the fresh Ketch of the day all on one platter. That's the best way to do it because then you get a little bit a little bit of everything that's fresh for the day. and so today we have some of the lobster.
This is okay Lobster here is one of the most famous things because it this is what they're really famous for in this port. Look at that beauty. This is grilled with butter, butter and parsley. Oh look at the color.
you have to just see the color of the brightness of that shell. so bright red and okay I'm going in that Lobster it's just so tender it just comes out of the Shelf um oh wow that is so sweet and so juicy. Oh delicious. I'll try some of the the grilled fish.
Oh yeah. two different types of fish. actually you can see those are Two different types of ship fish. A little bit of lemon.
I'll try this one on the bottom actually first. Oh juicy. firm. There's pure, like almost no seasoning, maybe just a little bit of salt and pepper.
A little bit of parsley sprinkled on top. Got squeeze of lemon, which is so neutral. so natural, so fresh. This is again the platter fried.
This one is the fried fish. Wow. Huge pieces of fried fish. Oh it's so so juicy.
And Flaky juice is actually coming out of that batter. Crispy and gooey. Maybe a beer batter? Um, a little bit thick beer batter, but it's like literally seals all the juices into the fish and keeps it. I mean when I when I pulled that fish open just like this puddle of juice came out? Oh that's wonderful.
It melts in your mouth. Okay, this is the giant calamari. Huge. You could use this as a bracelet.
Wow, Yeah, it's almost like the texture of chicken. It's so soft, just like a a bouncy chicken. Yeah, not rubbery, not stretchy or tough at all, but just extremely tender and just like it bounces. I think this would be good with some? Tabasco Okay, I'll try some of these local red shrimp.
Oh that's amazing. The color of the shell is exactly the color of the meat on the inside. These look like they've been poached or blanched. Look at how bright they are. Yes, so juicy, so juicy, so bright. Oh look at that. Oh that's a one biter. Maybe a quick dip in the tartar sauce? Oh, the shrimp is really nice.
really firm, sweet, a little bit of salty. All the shrimp is good. Okay I'm gonna go for the scallop next. Local Scallops: I Think is that the liver? No, No.
Oh yeah, it's the tongue. Yeah, oh his tongue. The tongue of the the scallop. Yes.
and it's even bigger than the scallop itself. I think maybe a little a little Tabasco on it will be excellent. Okay, um, totally melts in your mouth. The silkiness of the scallop, the tongue almost has like a Cheesy taste to it.
It's almost like melted cheese. This was another special of the day. the flat head Tails which is a type of fish and but I guess these are just the tail. Maybe the tail meet the strip of tail meat battered again in deep fried.
Oh that one melts in your mouth again. so soft and fluffy. The batter is a little bit, it's crispy but then kind of gooey on the inside. so you have kind of like a fluffy crispy batter that's salty and then the fish just dissolves on your tongue.
I Really like the grilled fish. Fried fish are good too. but yeah, the fish. The shrimp really good.
Okay I'm gonna do a ghost pepper oyster. Yes. Loaded up with ghost pepper. squeeze of lemon.
Here we go. a ghost pepper ghost pepper. oyster. Oh yeah.
oh just don't breathe into too fast. the smoked ghost pepper, the juice of the lemon and then all of that combining together with the sweetness. The melt in your mouth oyster. Oh that's so good.
That was about an hour and 15 minute drive from Apollo Bay and we drove through. It takes you. the road, winds you through the mountains, through the forest, through the national park and you go through. I Think one of the great things about The Great Ocean Road is that you go through so many different climate zones and ecosystems.
I Mean we went through a cloud forest on the way here, but we re-emerged to the ocean to what is probably the most iconic and famous and the greatest place to visit on any trip to the Great Ocean Road which is the 12 Apostles which we are going to see. But first we are stopping at the Gibson steps. The shorts Trail steps begin. Wow Wow look at that view.
Oh wow it is absolutely Majestic Beautiful! Our first Glimpse and we're gonna just hike down the 80s I think it's just said 80 steps but pretty steep. that's pretty far down there and the steps just go straight down the side of the cliff. waves crashing. Oh oh it's incredible.
Made it to the beach. Oh oh it's stunning. Yeah, this is otherworldly. Oh it's magical.
Wow, it's so vast and big and just magical. Look at that beach, the waves. Absolutely breathtaking. But we need to move on. We're gonna head back up because we have more more to see. Oh man, you just feel alive when you're here. And so we made it to the 12 Apostles. Lookout Viewpoint: Absolutely spectacularly beautiful right here at Sunset And although it's called the 12 Apostles, it originally included eight formations and their Limestone Rock Stacks uh However Unfortunately, one of them I think I believe back in 2005 collapsed and so there's seven of the stacks remaining from the that's viewable from this.
Viewpoint However, there are other Limestone Stacks Rock Stacks within other parts of the park. but it's it's really just magical. Majestic Breathtaking Beauty Foreign. So after a gorgeous sunset at 12 Apostles do we then drove.
It was just about a 10-minute drive to Port Campbell which is the the nearest town and this is where we're gonna spend the night. But we just wanted to have dinner so we came to uh, this place is called Clay Pot Bistro at the Port Campbell Pub and this is just classic pub food. Ordered a few different dishes to share. It looks oh yeah.
I mean the portion size is generous and looks really hearty. Homestyle Food: Big portions. Yes Wow. We got the seafood fettuccine steak, esteemed mussels, Lamb shank.
Yep, oh you can see it's tender. Oh wow. The lamb shank? Yes! Australian Lamb Wow. Mashed potato with mash on top, mash and vegetables? Yes.
all that lamb shank. Foreign. Oh with the mashed potatoes, that's Australian lamb. Oh delicious cheese on top.
Oh wow. Oh yes. Okay, this one is the seafood fettuccine. Oh that's really good.
Tomato, creamy, a little bit cheesy. You taste the flavor of the dog. Maybe they're using a seafood stock? I'm gonna take some flavor of the mussels and the shrimp in there. Oh that's really nice.
These are the mussels. Oh really Wow. Look at that color. She's away.
Oh yes. Oh nice. Oh Chef Gig. Well thank you Chef Gig.
All the juices, the garlic, the muscle, Fresh, meaty, juicy, vibrant. Oh yeah. really good. And now time for the steak with pepper sauce.
Wow! together with the fries, Big steak fries. Oh yes. oh that's a bite right there. Oh yes, Chef Gig just makes the masters of all bites.
Hmm. oh so good. The pepper gravy, the beef. it's a good natural beef.
and then the I love those fries. They're really good too. I Think everything is just what it needs to be. Filling, comforting, big sizes.
Definitely highly recommended. Good morning! I Have a coffee for sure! Um and we drove immediately over to lock our Gorge and I Was originally hoping we were going to do this last evening, but then it got too late. So here we are this morning and actually this has turned out to be an incredible decision. Uh, it's beautiful, It's quiet, it's peaceful, and again, this is another one of the iconic places to see on the Great Ocean Road and especially for the The Gorge where you can hike down to the the beach which is just surrounded by Limestone Cliffs thank you And so finally we've made it to the bottom here I Love the The Cliffs and the shelves. You could just see the layers of rocks stacked on top of each other and how their The Cliffs are just so so Sandy as well the aqua turquoise water. so clean, so pure, absolutely gorgeous. What a day! Amazing! Seafood We met some great people along the way and the natural scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommended! I Mean if you're in Victoria if you visit Melbourne it's well worth it to take a couple days to drive down the Great Ocean Road to eat some delicious food and again, natural scenery will blow your mind.

Another good video ๐ but majority of our salmon here in Victoria and Tasmania is farmed unfortunately, and GMO, full of hormones to make the salmon grow bigger. I was told this by a seller at a fish market here in Melbourne.
